WileyPLUS: Expensive, Clunky, and Hostile to Actual Learning
WileyPLUS is one of the most frustrating and poorly designed online learning platforms I have ever used. It feels less like an educational tool and more like a way for professors to outsource the actual work of teaching, creating meaningful course content, and designing fair assessments. The platform itself is clunky, outdated, and needlessly difficult to navigate. Assignments, readings, quizzes, and learning materials are presented in a format that makes even straightforward concepts harder to understand. Instead of supporting learning, the content is chopped into bland, repetitive, and poorly organized fragments that feel like unlearnable slop generated to fill space rather than help students develop genuine understanding. The quizzes are equally terrible. Questions often focus on obscure wording, tiny details, or rigid publisher-approved answers instead of testing whether students understand the material. The format encourages memorization and guessing rather than critical thinking. Feedback is often limited or unhelpful, meaning students can lose marks without receiving a meaningful explanation of what they misunderstood. Even worse, WileyPLUS can prevent students from submitting an assignment at all after the deadline. There may be no late-submission option, no automatic penalty, and no opportunity to upload completed work even minutes after the cutoff. A zero-late-submission policy built into a third-party platform is unnecessarily punitive and ignores the reality that students may experience technical problems, accessibility barriers, employment demands, illness, or other legitimate circumstances. Technology should not be used to remove an instructor’s discretion or turn a minor delay into an automatic zero. Students already pay significant tuition fees, yet many are then required to purchase access to a publisher platform that delivers inferior instruction, awkward formatting, and inflexible assessments. WileyPLUS does not improve the learning experience. It allows poorly designed courses to masquerade as structured education while shifting the burden, cost, and frustration onto students. A learning platform should make education clearer, more accessible, and more engaging. WileyPLUS accomplishes the opposite. It is expensive, rigid, poorly formatted, and deeply disconnected from how students actually learn.
