Horrible experience
Horrible experience! They not flexible at all. I had visa issue last minutes and they were not flexible with arrival time and refused to refund anything. Bad customer service and would recommend staying away!

TrovaTrip is a scam and an MLM. Not only did they not deliver on the trip and services promised, they are openly negligent. When almost everyone on our trip complained, they have blamed the tour operator that they outsourced to and said they can't do anything about it. Our over $3K USD tour (NOT including flights) lacked proper guides, accommodations and attractions. The guide Luigi lacked any expertise, shared personal stories and ignored questions. He also yelled at us for asking questions. Literally yelled at us and our host had to tell him to stop yelling at us. The constantly changing travel itinerary caused stress and inaccurate travel times - like being on a bus for 3 hours with no rest stop or having to have dinner at a gas station. Key attractions were just skipped - imagine going to Rome and not seeing the Colosseum or Pantheon? Will we didn't, so no imagining needed. One day there was a 5 hour delay because they double booked an attraction - we sat in sun with no food or water. The accommodations were awful, one costing just 100 Euros on booking.com. They offered us a 200USD refund only for the attractions missed (pasta cooking class, Colosseum visit, walking tour) not addressing our much bigger concerns. They refuse to do anything else and told our host she would need to compensate us if she wanted to refund us further. Their 'investigation' is closed despite only calling one person about their concerns when over 15 people submitted complaints.

Hi there, we completely understand how frustrating and difficult the back and forth has been, and we're sorry that we haven't been able to do more. As stated in previous correspondence, we take negative reviews very seriously, and do understand the groups disappointment. As you mention, to the Traveler there isn’t a differentiation between Trova and the Operator, and ultimately, we stand by our partner’s decision on the issued refund for the cost of the missed activities and additionally the stress of the changing itinerary. Our business model ensures that the bulk of revenue goes to the local team doing the majority of the on-the-ground work and booking (those same Trip Operators). Then, the Hosts are compensated for their time, energy (before and during trip), and marketing efforts. Trova takes the final, and smallest piece of proceeds. In travel, things can take unexpected turns, and when they do the best thing that we can do is investigate and seek to understand where things went awry and how we can solve, refund and make good as much as we and our partners deem appropriate, and ensure that we are improving every aspect of the experience for the future via those partner relationships. For example, we may not be able to solve the impact of a rude guide or staff member after the fact, but we can (and absolutely do) work with our partners to correct for the future. I know at this point, there is likely nothing our team can say to ease the frustration you are feeling. We are sorry, and we wish you all the best.

This company is a scam. They use influencers to lure you into trips that will never happen and getting a refund is impossible. When I asked for a refund I told them my original bank account was closed. I have worked in banking and the way that goes is when the payment it sent, it is rejected. The company literally cannot send the money to a closed account. TrovaTrip is saying that they have sent the money and it hasn’t been returned which is impossible. They are also requesting my bank directly contact them which is out of order. Even when I tried to have the bank contact them, there was no one has responding. I am out of $450 for a trip that never happened. Of course no one at TrovaTrip cares there only response is, the is our policy and it’s out of our control. No solutions. If they respond to this you will see exactly what I mean. If you are looking to travel you might as well throw your money out the window. You will have a much better experience and help support some people along the way.

Hi there! I know we've been in touch on a few different channels but didn't want to leave this one hanging without follow up as well. Please do keep following up with our customer service team as we work to solve this and get your refund to the appropriate place. As you may know from your time working in banking, there is an FTC law in place that requires us to issue refunds to the original payment method. Since the money wasn't rejected by the receiving bank, our customer service team needs to work with the bank directly to get to the bottom of this. More than anything, I want to assure you that we do care—deeply—about the experiences all of our Travelers have, whether or not they've gone on a trip. Please follow up with us on the original customer service thread so we can help.

TrovaTrip failed to cover the biggest tourist attractions in the 3 cities of Japan that we visited. In Tokyo, we didn’t see the Tokyo tower or visit shibuya. In Kyoto, bamboo forest and fushimi shrine was not part of the tour and in Osaka, we only had a few hours there and did not arrive in time to fully experience dontonburi street. The trip that I signed up was for a food tour and food was barely included in our tour. I spent more money out of pocket for food.

Hi Darline, thank you for sharing your feedback on your Japan itinerary, and we've passed this on to our Trip Design team. We work to offer a variety of itineraries that appeal to many different Travelers—for Japan this means some trips are focused on hiking, others on food or historical relevance. You'll see activities and sites on the trip itinerary and sign up pages. We hope that your feedback can help future Travelers know and plan any "must sees" in advance!

An absolutely ridiculous company. They do not give you your money back on a down payment if you want to cancel your trip. They say you only get a full refund if your spot is not confirmed, even though your spot gets confirmed the same day or the next. So you have no time to decide whether you want to cancel or not for a refund. Once your spot is confirmed, they only give a voucher for the amount of your down payment minus $100, to use for another trip within 12 months. How stupid is that? I made a huge mistake paying the down payment and using the company.
Response from TrovaTripMay 15, 2023
Hi Sakhi, we outline our cancellation and refund policy on all of our trip pages and in our Traveler Booking Terms throughout the sign-up process, and never want Travelers to be surprised—we would greatly appreciate any feedback you have to make the policy more transparent via our customer support team ([email protected]). We’ve built our policy to be flexible whenever possible for Travelers, while still protecting the work the Hosts and Trip Operators do at every stage of the trip process. As such, once a trip has been confirmed—meaning it reaches the minimum number of bookings required—the 25% down payment is non-refundable, but can be credited to a future trip. You can read more about why we’ve built the policy here: https://trovatrip.com/blog/how-trovatrip-works-how-we-make-money or review the Traveler Booking Terms in detail here: https://trovatrip.com/about/booking-terms Thank you for your honest feedback.

Did not meet exceptions. I would avoid this "travel" company at all costs. You will end up paying a lot of money for essentially free walking tours. My Trip: With very short notice our hotel was changed from a fun safe area(Shinjuku Washington Hotel) to the red light district of Tokyo known for love hotels on every street… it was dirty and gross (trash on the streets, women for sale) - I felt unsafe at night. When I booked the trip it was for the Shinjuku Washington Hotel. Had it originally been listed as Moxy in the red light district I would not have booked this trip. To get from where our original hotel was supposed to be to this last min bad decision of a hotel was a 40 min train ride. Which meant it was a 40 min train ride extra each way from all of the places I wanted to have dinners and see. It was a completely different trip than expected because location is everything. 4/17 Walking 9 miles was ridiculous when we were told we would be provided transportation. 4/18 Walking 7 miles was ridiculous when we were told we would be provided transportation. 4/20 Our bus did not pick us up in the morning. Which added to the feeling of poor planning and more public transportation. 4/21 This activity did not happen at all - Yumoto Hot Springs Area Visit. Which was a bummer because I was uncomfortable doing the completely naked optional bath. Group Dinner was gross - should have had an option for guests (even just a limited menu of 2 options) not just to bring out whatever mystery meat family style food they felt like….With zero explanation of what we were being served. Our bus left us at the restaurant and then we had to wait 10 mins in the rain for a new bus. Also drinks not being included with these group dinners is just tacky. Overall this vacation did not meet my expectations. & I hope this warning helps you if you are on the fence about booking with TrovaTrip. I did ask for a particle refund and this is the response I got: As per our terms, they did source an alternative property of the same star level. We do understand you did not like the new neighborhood and have subsequently requested that they do not use this hotel for future trips. As this move was unavoidable however, our Operator will not be providing compensation for the move. In regards to the transportation, public transportation is the most popular way of navigating Japan as well as the most environmentally friendly. We do limit the use of large coaches our Operators use in order to provide the most authentic experience possible for our travelers. We will work with our Trip Design team to ensure this is made clearer on our Trip pages going forward. In conclusion, Exo did state they appreciated the feedback provided and will be working closely with our Trip Design team to further improve the itineraries for our community. While we understand that you did not fully enjoy this experience, Exo will not be providing compensation as all services were delivered as advertised. *I have also filed a claim with the BBB & I will probably make a video about my experience to warn others.*

Hi Amber, first and foremost, we want to thank you for sharing feedback on your trip to Japan. We know you're in touch with the team directly about your experiences so won't reiterate the discussion in full here. However, we do want to say that feedback is essential in helping us build a better trip for future Travelers and we appreciate that you've thoroughly recapped your experience and given our team the time to properly investigate the items you flagged. As shared above, we have requested that our Trip Operator not use the substituted neighborhood or hotel for future trips, and are working with our Trip Design team to ensure the amount of walking and public transportation on itineraries is clear in advance. Regarding meals, we encourage folks to approach new countries and cultures with an open mind and curiosity! We have shared your feedback on meals with the restaurants in hopes they can add variety to the set menus offered to groups, and continue to encourage Travelers venturing to a new place to research local cuisine—and be prepared to try something new. While we understand that this response can’t change your experiences, we greatly appreciate the opportunity to improve trips for all and wish you only the best on your future travels. Our team will continue to follow up with you as appropriate in the official TrovaTrip channels.

Warning! Do not book with this company!! They have the absolute worst customer service and thrive off of stealing peoples money. I had to cancel a trip FIVE MONTHS in advance and they refuse to give me my deposit back. Their process after booking involves receiving a “pending” email and then a “confirmation” email. Once you receive the “confirmation” email, your deposit (mine was $625!!) is no longer refundable. These emails came to me within ONE minute of each other. Basically, they robbed me! And now refuse to refund me based on some ridiculous “company policy”. Such a SCAM!! Update: Their reply below is also complete BS. Just an excuse for robbing people. I am aware of this BS “policy” Trova Trip. You are very transparent about stealing money from people. Literally the worst. May karma bite you in the ass.

Hi Azita, we hear your frustration, and are sorry that you had a negative experience with booking and cancelling your trip. We work to be as transparent as possible with our cancellation and refund policies and never want Travelers to be surprised. For clarity on how the process works: - You book your spot on a trip and pay a 25% down payment: while your spot is pending, that 25% down payment is fully refundable. - Once your spot is confirmed: that 25% down payment is non-refundable. The timing of a trip confirmation can vary since it's based on booking the minimum number of spots on the trip. - If confirmed more than 90 days prior to departure (and outside of the 72 hour cancellation window), you will receive a trip credit in the amount of the down payment, minus a $100 cancellation fee for each spot canceled. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us.
