The best alternative to Quicken Classic Deluxe.
I was a Quicken Classic user for around 15 years and was of course not thrilled with the move to a subscription model (especially for a desktop app - not SaaS), but it started off at a reasonable number so I continued with it to maintain my workflow. Then they started increasing the renewal price year over year to where it is now double the cost, yet the desktop app still hasn't materially improved - clunky performance, missing financial institutions, database corruption, not implementing features that the user community has been requesting for years, and what I felt was a lack of urgency from their technical leadership to dig into sync problems and drive resolution with the banks. When I saw the renewal cost this year went up to $84, I knew it was finally time to jump ship. Thanks to a helpful Redditor, I discovered TallyMint while searching for a Quicken Classic replacement without recurring fees or much lower fees. My other main requirement was having a running ledger balance (not just a live balance). Quicken dropped this common sense feature from Simplifi, it's not in Empower, and while it is in other apps like MoneyDance their annual cost was even higher than Quicken. So TallyMint quickly rose to the top of the list. Functionally it is very similar to Quicken Classic with the ledgers, views, bills, and budgets, but is lightning fast in comparison. This app was obviously designed with modern dev tools and it shows - switching between menus and entering or editing transactions is instant, and I felt my frustration level reduce considerably after years of waiting and waiting for Quicken to load, unlock the password vault, manually sync accounts, go to my preferred ledger, and then finally get to work. With TallyMint, I am where I need to be within a couple seconds of launching the app. That is huge. While I was not thrilled having to pay a subscription for SimpleFIN to sync my banks and cards, I will say this - it is only $15/yr and it works with more of my banks than Quicken Connect did. It was easy to set up, and has the added benefit of being a standalone aggregator that you can use with other apps as well - unlike Quicken's proprietary solution. While SimpleFIN comes with its own drawbacks, namely its once-a-day sync frequency and not currently supporting my mortgage lender Pennymac, I still find it and TallyMint to be a much faster and more reliable service than Quicken Classic. One last thing - TallyMint support is excellent. They listen to their users, they implement requested features in a timely manner, and they aren't charging you any recurring fee for these updates or patches. You pay once for the desktop app and that's it. That is pretty remarkable in the Subscription Age. (That said, if you want the advantages of SaaS access, they do have a subscription for that version.) If you're like me and come from the Quicken Classic world but are tired with the constant price hikes and the clunky desktop performance, definitely consider TallyMint. I am very impressed with the experience and think you will be too.

Thank you, Steve! Fifteen years of Quicken is a lot to move, and we are glad TallyMint made the switch worth it. We really appreciate the detailed review, and keep the feature requests coming.
