Extremely misleading marketing and an unacceptable experience with SmartEnergy. They attract customers by advertising a $100 credit after six months, but that small incentive is nothing compared with the excessive electricity-supply charges customers may pay. My bill clearly shows what happened: * Penelec current charges: $131.43 * SmartEnergy current charges: $240.45 * Total electric bill: $371.88 SmartEnergy alone charged me $240.45—almost twice the Penelec portion of my bill. They were charging approximately $0.19 per kWh for electricity supply, separately from Penelec’s delivery and other charges. In my experience, this promotion felt like a bait-and-switch: advertise a $100 credit to get customers enrolled, then charge a high per-kWh supply rate that can cost them hundreds of dollars more. The promised $100 credit did not come close to compensating for the additional expense. Do not be distracted by the advertised reward. Check SmartEnergy’s exact price per kWh and compare it with Penelec’s current Price to Compare before enrolling. Review every line of your electric bill because SmartEnergy’s charge appears separately from Penelec’s charges. I strongly regret signing up. Based on my billing experience, I would not recommend SmartEnergy to anyone.
