Still happy with Rype after 2.5 years
I have been using Rype for 2.5 years now. Initially for French but I have recently added Spanish as well. I had schoolgirl French but am a complete beginner for Spanish Rype has developed and improved a lot in that time Initially the interface and booking system was clunky and not very user friendly. It is now much improved and it’s easier to tell what teachers are available when. It’s still not perfect to my way of thinking but it is workable. When I started you were limited to one language, now you could have one lesson a week in 7 languages if you wish ( not that I would recommend it) The teachers that were on the list 2.5 years ago seem, by and large, to still be in the list, so there would appear to be low staff turnover which is key. In addition the number of teachers available has grown considerably in that time. I find the quality of the teachers to be good. They all have their own style so you will need to try a few out before you find a good match for you I use Rype mainly for learning the spoken language, but the teachers seem to be really flexible so will tailor their approach to suit your needs. I know my French teacher Jonathan has studied complex telecommunication documents for a student to help them with a job in France for example. I think it is good value for money. I have a half hour lesson every day if possible, 3 Spanish and 4 French. I am a bit lazy and do very little apart from these lessons otherwise I am sure I would be much better. A recent holiday in France proved to me that I could hold my own, have a conversation and be complemented on my French. I was a little worried about starting a new Language from scratch as I hadn’t done that since I was about 12, but Uly got me conversing from lesson one. I know I could progress much quicker with a bit more effort from myself, nevertheless, I am pleased with how things are going. As for areas for improvement: Perhaps there could be a database with videos explaining complex grammar points, vocab tools and listening comprehension along with transcripts and translations in support of the tutors, as good comprehensible input is hard to find, particularly for beginners. Hopefully this is an area they can focus on going forward All in all very pleased with Rype
