Meh test, terrible company (they were literally banned here before for botting positive reviews)
The test quality is meh, but it's extremely oversold. For one, they lie about their normative sample. They claim it's 1600+ when in reality it's only about 500, and the age bands are ridiculously wide (I believe there are only three when most professional tests usually have 10-30). A lot of the subtests are also poorly designed. Verbal reasoning, for example, has a discontinue rule when the items are randomized, and this causes wild variability in scores. And for those who don't know, this company is also *extremely* shady. The online communities they run (especially on Reddit) are chock-full of bots pretending to talk with each other. They were banned on this exact website before also for botting reviews, which I wouldn't be surprised if they're doing again, and their old reddit community (r/RiotIQ) was banned. You can see the new one on reddit (r/RiotIQTest) and witness the bot conversations for yourself. The test is also extremely overpriced. Their whole selling point is that one guy on the team has credentials like this gives their test some kind of magical quality, even though the items were made largely by a video game developer with no psychometrics experience. There are plenty of online alternatives which are free and can provide an estimate of your IQ that is just as accurate, if not more. No need to pay the exorbitant 50 bucks for the middling experience of taking this test. RIOT started out as an admirable project. They claimed the RIOT would be the first free, open-source IQ test, but now gatekeep all technical documentation of their test because of the serious problems in their factor model that they don't want people to notice (see the paper "An Independent Analysis of the RIOT IQ Test" that they've conveniently ignored even though it was brought directly to their attention). It seems like the RIOT team's mission has shifted from creating a genuinely useful instrument and caring about the empirical details to just shilling their test relentlessly. If you want to take a professional IQ test, have a psychologist give you the WAIS or Stanford-Binet. If you want to take an IQ test developed by a "professional," you can take the RIOT. There's a difference between the two.
