I would recommend this to everyone....
I would recommend this to everyone needing that extra push to get their kid interested in reading. My son was interested at 4 years old and we enrolled him without knowing many words at all and now he's finishing kindergarten scoring off the charts in reading. He will be attending this summer to prepare for 1st grade just to keep the momentum going.

For the reading program
For the reading program, last summer was our first time and we wanted to try it out for our child. I really like that there were several locations to choose from, the schedule consists of several weeks (versus an entire semester of commitment), the makeup classes were available, and also the registration was very easy without much of a hassle. The program itself with the course contents, materials and instructor facilitating the entire class were all very streamlined. Because the teacher was very engaging, it helps to spark interest with the students. Overall, it is a very crucial supplement for children, especially during the summers to aide in reinforcing their interest and motivation in reading.
The location is on a university campus - for us, it was very convenient, but within the university, it was very large that there was confusion on the first day. Signs were limited to direct those who had designated rooms. The halls had individual names but it was not displayed anywhere, so getting to the actual classrooms were a bit of a challenge. I had sent in feedback, that perhaps during the first day - there would be someone appointed to be by the main entrance to direct families to particular halls/rooms. Otherwise, sufficient signs would have also assisted in relieving those who were lost. The reason why this is important because as students entered into the classrooms late, the teacher had to stop and sign/process; it took up almost 30-40 minutes of classroom time. For paying families - the lost time in the classroom is considered very precious.
For every class with the younger children, I would recommend that parents are always on-call. For our particular classroom - they do allow the parents/guardians to stay within the classroom (but seated separately and cannot be near the students to avoid any disruption.) However, I witnessed times when the parents/guardians leave their child in the classroom and come back promptly when the class ends. I do not think that is ideal because there were so many instances when a child needed to use the bathroom, wanted to speak with their parents, misbehaving so the teacher had to look for the kid's parents, and so on. (one case was a child's tooth fell out...) There were so many distractions in terms of each child's different demands because there were instances when the parents were nowhere to be found, so some parents had to help out (such as for the bathroom run). But for little-aged children, that should not be anyone else's responsibility but the child's own guardian or parents. (Plus there are liability issues and so forth.) It should be communicated that parents should be nearby, whether inside or outside the classroom, to attend to the child in case any circumstances arise. There was actually one day where I was waiting outside, and the teacher came out almost every 10 minutes asking for someone's parents if they were around and then having to find someone. (Mostly bathroom requests.) Some were around to help but there were more cases of those who were not around. I felt that was inefficient because that was once again, class time that could have been saved. It was not the instructor's fault, as they were probably trying their best to accommodate all these situations. It was just frustrating to see it all happening because the teacher had to "call out" for the parents and if there were no response, there was a need to find a volunteer to help. However, this could easily be resolved with the mandate that parents be required to stay near the outside of classroom throughout entire class time in the event they were to be called upon. The child should be able to seek their parents who are readily waiting right outside.
Those little details are not as major since it is really not a part of the overall curriculum and teaching staff - but worth mentioning in hopes that the program will look to improve.
All in all, I do want to commend the staff and organizers who have been behind this entire program. The concept is really on target with the demands with today's needs with literacy and overall education. So many thanks for the creation of this program and those who have been working hard to make this all very successful. I look forward to future summers with this program. 5 stars!

Thank you very much for your detailed review, TC. You've identified the real goal of our program which is to motivate kids and to help them be successful so they develop a lifelong love of reading. I'm so happy that you found this program effective for your child. I also appreciate you bringing some logistical concerns to our attention. We do require the parents of our youngest students to stay for at least part of the class, as you mentioned. We train our teachers in classroom management techniques and we work with our educational partners to make the facilities as accessible as possible for parents. We will take your feedback into consideration for future summers. We really look forward to having you back in class! - Tara, Customer Care Specialist
