Pimsleur is intentionally focused on helping learners build real-world speaking and listening skills first. The core lessons are designed around Active Participation, prompting learners to recall, respond, and produce the language in conversation rather than primarily studying grammar explanations or written exercises. That said, Pimsleur is not limited to speaking practice alone. The program also systematically develops reading skills through a unique phonetic approach developed by Dr. Paul Pimsleur, helping learners connect the sounds of the target language with its written form. This reading work is separate from, and complementary to, the development of speaking and listening skills. Grammar is also not ignored. Instead of presenting grammar only as abstract rules upfront, Pimsleur introduces structure organically through spoken examples, context, and repeated use. For some of our most popular languages, Mini Lessons are also available to provide more explicit grammar explanations and additional support alongside the core lessons. We appreciate your suggestion and understand that some learners would like more explicit grammar support across more languages. Dr. Paul Pimsleur was the first language educator to systematically apply spaced repetition principles to language learning because he wanted learners not only to encounter new words and phrases, but to retain and recall them when needed. In the Pimsleur Method™, this is known as Graduated Interval Recall: carefully timed review that brings words and phrases back at strategic intervals to strengthen long-term memory and practical recall. It was a revolutionary approach when Dr. Pimsleur developed it more than 60 years ago, and spaced repetition is now widely used across many subjects because of its value for long-term learning and retention. Over the past several years, we have been updating many of our courses to reflect more modern language use and cultural contexts. These updates have already been completed for our most popular languages, including Spanish and several other high-demand courses. We recognize that some of our smaller-language courses, including Croatian, still contain content that has not yet been updated. Because these updates involve rewriting, rerecording, and revalidating course content, they are significant projects that take time to complete. We are continuing to work through the rest of our catalog and prioritize future updates as resources allow. Feedback from learners like you played an important role in the revisions we've already made, and we appreciate you calling out Croatian specifically.
