For a voice learning language app,
For a voice learning language app,, it is unacceptable for there to be no setting to change your language speed. 90% of the time I am driving or multitasking while trying to learn and it’s too quick expecting you to be sitting there with 100% focus and even at that point, I think it would still be too fast. They could easily add some dynamic time adjustment that only adjust the pauses between the call and response instead of the actual speaking of the speakers so that you have more time to respond, but you hear things at a native speed
Response from Pimsleur Language ProgramsJun 25, 2026
Hi Jared, Thank you for taking the time to share such thoughtful feedback. We appreciate that your suggestion was not to slow down the native speakers, but to provide more response time between prompts. The pacing of the core Pimsleur lessons is an intentional part of the method. Learning to understand and speak a new language requires the brain to adapt to its natural sounds, rhythm, and cadence, which is why the lesson audio is presented at normal conversational speed. Training the ear at natural speed is essential for developing real-world listening and speaking skills. The response timing is also carefully calibrated. A core principle of the Pimsleur Method™ is Anticipation: learners are encouraged to actively retrieve and produce the language before hearing the correct answer. That brief moment of effort helps automate speech and strengthen long-term memory. Rather than simply matching the expected speaking time, the pauses are calculated using Dr. Paul Pimsleur's instructional principles to create the optimal level of challenge for learning and retention. Changing those intervals would alter a fundamental part of the learning process rather than simply making the lesson easier to follow. We also recognize that learners sometimes want additional time to practice. That's why many of the review activities in the app allow the audio to be slowed down, giving learners the opportunity to reinforce pronunciation, listening, and recall after completing the lesson. We appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective and hope this provides some insight into why the lessons are structured the way they are. We hope you'll continue your language-learning journey with Pimsleur and discover how these principles are designed to help learners develop lasting conversational confidence. Best, The Pimsleur Team
