Hi Clayton, thank you so much for your honest and balanced review, and we're so glad our customer service team took good care of you. 🤍 You made great points in this review, we'll address them in order. Our app IS simple and basic. 😶‍🌫️ Thanks to all the feedback, improvements are on the way in the near future. Free app updates will be available to all existing customers once the new version rolls out. Very sorry to hear about the fan noise and cooling performance issues. There is a Fan Limit as well as a Non-Responsive Cooling option that take care of noise (I use the fan limit), but sometimes you have a sleeper on one side who really wants high speed cooling and no white noise. Our fans will generate white noise, even in non-responsive mode (constant fan speed, no fluctuations). Very understandable that a sleeper who doesn't like white noise would find it disruptive. It's possible you were experiencing bed recirculation if the cooling didn't feel cool in a regular room temperature room. This occurs with blocked fans at the foot, breathability issues in bedding, or if you get a little tent at the foot of the bed allowing body heat to get pulled back into the fans - keeping sheets and blankets smooth and flat over the foot of the bed and topper prevents this. However, if your room was up in the 30s celsius, in that case your bed would be the coolest place in the room, but you wouldn't get the chilly effect and you're exactly right, it may not feel cool enough. Sleepers in hot and humid environments without AC face a genuine cost-benefit analysis dilemma. Our topper will help, but not chill them. A subcooled water system will chill their bed, but the external machine warms the room up by a few degrees, and if you subcool a bed's surface below the dewpoint in a humid environment you get condensation in your bedding. We have no easy answer for this just yet, aside from recommending some gentle AC to take the edge off the heat. Many of our sleepers report turning their AC down once they have a Smart Topper - but with zero AC in a hot environment, that is hard! Hi Julie, thank you so much for choosing Snug, and for your thoughtful feedback! That's a great point about not being able to rotate the topper, with it needing to be mesh-side-up with fans at the foot. We would love to help you with the fan and responsiveness to your body temperature, though. 🤍 For fan volume, what you might like is to go into the app and set the Fan Limit for around 50%. (I have mine around 30-40%, because I'm sensitive to noise and windchill.) For body heat, the topper works like a thermostat, and will keep your skin exactly at the temperature set point you choose for Sleep and Wake Phases. The topper offers a 20 degree span of skin temperature set points, -10 to +10, with Middle 0 representing "average comfortable skin temperature." The trick is choosing the right set point for you. It's very subjective - one person's perfect set point will feel hot to some folks after a couple hours and cold to to others, depending on your personal physiology. But there will be a "sweet spot" - the goal in the first week is to find it, using our recommended settings for cold and hot sleepers as a starting point. What I usually recommend is if you find you wake up hot, use the manual controls (or app, but controls are preferred in the middle of the night) to make your set point only 1-2 levels cooler. Then, once it is adjusted, press and hold the down/cool button for 5 seconds to activate a cold burst. What this does is a) optimize your set point without overcorrecting, and b) get rid of the overheating you're experiencing in the moment. One of the biggest mistakes new users make is what we affectionately call "button mashing" if they wake up too hot or cold, not realizing how very subtle of a change is needed and how drastic a multi-level change can be. (Each level represents 1 degree of colder or warmer skin temperature, and over the course of the night that is a very significant transfer of body heat that impacts your core.) The same principle applies for cold sleepers, we recommend they adjust only 1-2 levels warmer if they are too cold, then press and hold the "up/warm" manual control button for 5 seconds for a hot burst. (This will give them full-strength heating for 30 minutes.) I hope this helps! That is a huge win. We're also thankful the low-maintenance philosophy is something you're benefiting from. Regarding the topper not feeling "cold to the touch," this is absolutely correct and we completely understand some people prefer that. Our goal has always been to keep the sleeper's body temperature at a perfect sleeping set point (based on skin temp) for them, rather than to make them or their bed "cold." It is a tradeoff, depending on what you're looking for. With subcooling you deal with things like condensation in your bedding if the bed or topper surface is cooled below the dewpoint in your sleep environment, especially in more humid climates. This is one of the potential sources of mold in water-cooled sleep systems. Subcooling units also require more electricity, so higher costs and more heat from the subcooling unit on the floor. These can increase ambient room temperatures up to 10F, in a 10x10' room. BUT - we affirm that it's give and take. There's a reason there are multiple options on the market, so everyone finds what is right for them. 🤍 We have concluded that everyone hates our app and are actively working on improvements. 😅 Thank you so much for calling this out - it's all the feedback that has allowed us to move this to the top of our list of priorities. We're thrilled to hear you've found Perfectly Snug to be a great Chillipad alternative /water-based system alternative, but very sorry to hear we fall short on the app. To be perfectly honest, we agree 😵‍💫 - the app is in desperate need of an update, and we are working on one currently. When released, it will be available to all current customers for free in the app store (we expect to release this as an update rather than a new app, but that isn't confirmed yet). Thank you (and all the Snug fam!) for being patient and gracious with us about this. Regarding your room temperature, we can affirm what you're saying. If your room is 78-80F or warmer, the topper will make your bed the coolest place in the room for you to be, but you're unlikely to get cold. It's still enough for most people to sleep through the night in conditions they otherwise couldn't, but it's something to consider. The plus is that our system won't heat your room any more than it already is, which is a known limitation with water-based system subcooling floor units (as you experienced). Subcooling a mattress topper below your bedroom's dewpoint can also result in condensation and mold in your sleep environment, particularly if it's humid where you live. That's not a guarantee, it's just a risk. If you'd ever like a hand optimizing your settings, please feel free to reach out to the team at [email protected], if you haven't already. When you say a Fan Speed of 5 is what works for you, I'm unclear on whether you have your Sleep Phase set to Cold 5 (-5) with Responsive Cooling enabled (automatic temperature adjustment), or with Responsive Cooling disabled (constant fan speed). Both of these are good options depending on the situation, but I would think on a night of 78-80F you might prefer Responsive Cooling disabled, so you can do anything from Cold 5 to Cold 10 and receive maximum constant cooling flow.
