OmegaQuant is an independent, CLIA-certified lab that offers nutritional & health status testing to researchers, clinicians and the public. We test: Omega-3 Index Vitamin D Prenatal DHA Mother's Milk DHA Our goal is to offer the highest quality analytical services to researchers and to provide simple tests of nutritional status to consumers, with the ultimate purpose of advancing the science and use of nutrients to improve health. Shop Tests Our Story Dr. Bill Harris, a leading expert in omega-3 fatty acids, founded OmegaQuant in 2009. He obtained his Ph.D. in Human Nutrition from the University of Minnesota and did post-doctoral fellowships in Clinical Nutrition and Lipid Metabolism with Dr. Bill Connor at the Oregon Health Sciences University. His interest in omega-3 fatty acids began with his postdoctoral work when he published his first study on the effects of salmon oil on serum lipids in humans (1980). Since that time he has been the recipient of five NIH grants for studies on the effects of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) on human health. He has more than 350 publications relating to fatty acids, including omega-3s, in medical literature and was an author on two American Heart Association scientific statements on fatty acids: “Fish Consumption, Fish Oil, Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Cardiovascular Disease” (2002), and “Omega-6 Fatty Acids and Risk for Cardiovascular Disease” (2009) both published in the journal Circulation. Dr. Harris co-invented the Omega-3 Index in 2004 and made it commercially available to the research community and the public in 2009. To date, the Omega-3 Index has been used as the standard measure of omega-3 status in more than 200 clinical studies. Dr. Harris is also a Professor in the Department of Medicine in the Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota. Dr. Harris moved on as OmegaQuant’s President in late 2020 to establish the Fatty Acid Research Institute (FARI), where he will go back to his roots of conducting res

Much needed information in an understandable format.

I do not understand, how the index omega3 is calculated. It should be EPA + DHA as also described in the test explanation (a percentage, which is simply a measure of the amount of EPA and DHA). My EPA is 3,94% and my DHA is 5,15% so total it is 9,09%. But my omega3 index is 11,68%.So there is something wrong in the results.

Dear Tomas, The EPA and DHA levels that you find in the Omega-3 Index Complete full fatty acid report (the percentages that you cite) are from whole blood, not red blood cells. Whereas the Omega-3 Index level is the EPA and DHA percentage in red blood cells. It is a bit confusing, but you cannot add up the EPA and DHA from the full fatty acid panel and equal them to the Omega-3 Index as they are completely different measurements. The Omega-3 Index (red blood cell metric) is calculated from whole blood on the filter paper. EPA+DHA are almost entirely concentrated in the red blood cell, so the Omega-3 Index is higher than the whole blood EPA+DHA level, which is why we use a calculation to estimate it. I believe the difference between our value and those from other labs could be due to the antioxidant blend on our cards, which prevents fatty acid degradation. In other words, our value may be slightly higher due to that preservative. In both cases, you have very good omega-3 status! The OmegaQuant Team

Easy process. Results took a bit long to get

I was very pleased with the OmegaQuant Omega Plus testing kit, the analysis and, overall, the service. They alerted me when they received my sample back and gave me a timeline for when I could expect the results, which they stuck to. The only thing that didn't quite go according to plan was that the kit took 9 days to arrive after I ordered. This could've been the postal service that was used but it was a bit worrying at the time.
