A good wallet tainted by a poor network fees
The trouble is that the fees on the etherium network are so high that the cost of transfers and withdrawls are prohibitive. In many cases it can cost more to swap/withdraw than the value of your wallet balance. I feel bad for metamask as the app is quite good, and its clear that they have invested a lot in it. I just dont think crypto is anywhere like being a practical alternative to fiat, even close. That said, as it stands, if you deposit funds into the metamask wallet, you are unlikely see them again with the current state of the network

You're not wrong. There is still a ton of work to be done in web3. Accessibility is a major concern of ours. Web3 is difficult to jump into for most users, so we're working on a few different ideas to help. Current fees absolutely inhibit growth of the ecosystem. No technology emerges fully formed. There are plans to address the txn fee issue, but we're stuck waiting for Shard Chains just like everyone else. Once the Merge completes successfully, the path is paved for the Shard Chains upgrade. After that, Mainnet fees should be low enough that they're barely even a consideration. Stop by our community support forum if you need help or have questions: https://community.metamask.io/
