I would title this project "Total Novice Establishes 5 super healthy plants in 90 days
Well they gave me all of the information needed to be successful growing the Doyle Thornless Blackberry plants. I had them delivered in April and my brand new raised bed was 100% prepared awaiting the 5 blackberry bushes I purchased. I made sure the PH was 6.0 with a combination of nutrient rich soils ready to go ! I planted them immediately and just when I thought it was safe to go in the water, JAWS showed up !!! Here in southern New Jersey we experienced what seemed to be frost every other day.....I never saw anything like it before !! I thought I probably had lost the plants for good !!! I covered them as best I could, but the cold was extermely bitter, more like January cold.............. I went to the Doyle website and read again everything they had printed there. The information made it clear that these plants are an extremely hearty variety. I don't think they were pre hardened for weather, and they seemed stunted for several weeks, a few leaves withered, some lost some color, but the plants weren't growing. The fact that they were still alive made me feel that I had a fighting chance that they would pull through !!! Then all of the sudden I noticed some small amount of growth.....not much but growth !!!!! a week later every plant had several new shoots with gorgeous green super healthy leaves !!!! Two weeks later two plants had their first blooms, only a few on each plant, but the shoots on almost all of the plants had grown about 7 or 8 inches !!!! They all look super healthy. I am not looking to get any kind of harvest this season, if I get something worthwhile I will consider it a bonus !!!! My entire goal is to get these plants firmly established with a strong foothold before the growing season ends in preperation for next spring when I hope to have a banner year harvesting some of these blackberries !!!!!
