Fun Mission to Portland, Maine
This is our first time working with Experience Mission. I found that their organization leading up to the mission was easy to use and convenient. Autumn Zimmerman was easy to reach and knowledgeable. As we got closer to our mission start date, I started to communicate with the person on site. She did a good job of answering my questions so we could be prepared for the week. I found that I had more questions that the information provided but we were able to work together to get things settled. Once we arrived, we were able to jump right in. The one issue we ran into was showers. Originally we were told that the YMCA would allow us to shower there, in conversations I was told that we would be Showering at Planet Fitness. When we arrived we were told that we would actually need to sign up our Youth online and have them download an app to their phones. It worked out but I would have liked to set this up before we arrived, especially because some students have restrictions on their phones that parent's must approve. Our morning work at Preble Street was wonderful. The staff there were great at putting us right to work and instructing us for each task. Our group spent the afternoons working with The Root Cellar, helping to run their Super Summer Kids Camp. Our Youth really connected with the children and worked side by side with the staff and volunteers. We were also serving alongside another mission team. We enjoyed this as well but it would have been helpful for the schedules to be laid out clearly so we knew when we would be solo and when we would have the other team. Our Youth worked hard and enjoyed themselves. I believe this experience opened their eyes and their hearts to how God uses his people to show love to others. I had thought the Mission Devotionals would have been something we went through during the trip, but upon receiving them I realized they are a much better tool for preparing the Youth for the trip. I would have requested to receive them early if I had known. We had two devotionals with the EM team, I had thought is was going to be four. We did plan out our own time as a team as well. Overall, we were satisfied by what Experience Mission provided - meals, lodging and service opportunities. The on the ground organization was a bit lacking but they were willing to work with us through any issues. We do see how the Lord is using the groups there in Portland, Maine and will continue to pray for the families we met and organizations we worked with.
