I went with them to South Africa for 3 months. It was a really good experience. All the logistics were handled well. Sometimes there was a bit of a sacristy mentally but we were always well feed and our needs were met. When a conflict arose during the trip, EM handled it well.

I was apart of your Experience Mission Costa Rica Immersion program in the summer of 2018. Something I thought was interesting was during training, we were told not to bring gifts or give money to the locals. When I was there, there would be one week short-term teams that would come in and give gifts as prizes and things like that. In my opinion, this is wrong. Even though these teams were not mine, I saw them doing the opposite of what we had learned. I know that it is up to the immersion intern to deal with things of that nature, but it was never seen as a problem. Despite that, I enjoyed the experience of living with a host family and being able to learn more of their language and more about their culture.

Thanks for you review, Abigail, and you're totally on the right track! We tell all of our short and longer-term volunteers not to bring things to give away in our international communities, but unfortunately, some still do, complicating relationships we've built over many years with the community. We've made this a special point of emphasis over the last year or so, and most volunteers now understand the negative implications of handing things out for free instead of building authentic relationships. We hope your time in Costa Rica had a positive impact on the way you view God and people as you live and serve others back home!
