EasySupport hacked?
When my Canon printer stopped working, I found a website purporting to be from Canon, but when I phoned the number provided, the agent said it was something else, a name which I couldn't understand, but that he could fix my problem. The agent had me sign into Easysupport.com, and with my help took over my computer. At the end of his work, he said he had fixed the problem by altering both the operating system and the printer driver. He then asked for $299.99. I told him that he had not told me there would be a fee, and that I didn't want to pay it. He then hung up. My printer still did not work, so I called another number, this time a real Canon number. After I described the problem, they said it was a hardware problem that just could not be fixed, so I would need to replace the printer. Afraid that I might have been the victim of a scam, I then phoned Apple, who looked at my computer and said that from what they could see there was no malware. ******************* From the reply from EasySupport, it looks like some very sophisticated hack occurred. First, when I googled Canon, the number indicated turned out to be something other than Canon, though I couldn't understand the name I was told. Then I was asked to log into EasySupport/connect.com while I was still on the phone, and the person I talked to had me download a program that allowed him to take control of my computer. A few minutes later he said he had fixed the problem (which turned out not to be true) and asked for money, and when I refused he hung up. When I googled Canon again, I did not find the number I had originally called. My apologies if in fact the website did not belong to EasySupport. In view of their reply, I would change my rating to a neutral three stars. But I suggest they look into how this hack occurred.
