Room for improvements
When I think about open source CMS's I think ease of use, extensibility, integration.... when the system is tied into a paid model I then expect an impressive, high level of support to go along with the product. Unfortunately, DNN falls short in both realms. We currently use it rather extensively, and much of the basis for the decision was because the product is in the Microsoft Stack. If your requirements are it has to be MS Stack and Open source this will be a top three'ish CMS. Having said that, if you remove the MS requirement it quickly fails that need. If you end up choosing the paid model you'll find the support is unfortunately woefully inadequate. We started augmenting our DNN support with a third party support provider and have more luck with them, than DNN itself. Another item to be aware of if you're considering their pricing. For lack of better way to say it, it's idiotic. The pricing almost doubles to host DNN yourself in the cloud. I can understand price increases of that magnitude if you are having DNN host it (Which they do offer) however we host locally on our VMs, and according to DNN if we host the VM's in our Azure environment the pricing model switches to be based on the amount of traffic our site gets, thus doubling the cost. In all honesty, I'd like for this to be a better product... theme modifications are easy to understand and tweak... however module development is a pain. I'll continue to watch the product, however if you're seriously considering this, my advise would be stay with the free community version and utilize 3rd party support site.

4/11 - Thanks again for your input. Regarding module development, we’re in the process of creating documentation for use by module developers. Regarding customer support, we’ve clearly underperformed, given that you’re using a third party support provider. But, our customer support manager would like to have a brief conversation with you, to better understand your support experiences. So, feel free to reach us at your earlier convenience. Regards - Franck 3/10 - Hi John – Thank for your comments regarding our product and service. We are taking your concern very seriously, and someone at DNN will be in touch with you shortly.
