Confusing cancellation process and extremely frustrating customer service
Title: Confusing cancellation process and extremely frustrating customer service I signed up for Care.com years ago but had not meaningfully used the service in a very long time. After being charged for a renewal previously, I believed I had canceled my subscription. I later discovered that I was charged another annual renewal fee of $165.65. When I logged in to cancel again, I realized the cancellation process requires multiple screens, confirmations, and additional prompts before cancellation is actually finalized. The workflow is confusing enough that it is very easy to believe your subscription has already been canceled when it has not. As soon as I noticed the charge, I immediately canceled the account and contacted customer service requesting a refund. Unfortunately, most of the responses I received were scripted replies repeating that subscriptions are “non refundable,” without meaningfully addressing the cancellation experience itself. The customer service process became frustrating on its own. When I tried replying to support emails, I repeatedly received automated messages saying the issue had already been resolved and directing me back into the Help Center workflow to start over again. Eventually, my newer support requests stopped receiving responses altogether. What concerned me most was discovering during my research that the FTC had previously taken enforcement action against Care.com related to confusing subscription cancellation practices and consumers continuing to be billed after believing they had canceled. I had no prior knowledge of that case before researching my own issue, but the concerns described by the FTC closely matched my experience. This entire situation could have been resolved with a simple goodwill refund for a service I did not knowingly intend to renew and had not meaningfully used in years. Care.com could improve this experience significantly by: * simplifying and clarifying the cancellation process, * providing clearer confirmation when cancellation is complete, * and empowering customer service to reasonably resolve unintended renewal situations instead of relying entirely on scripted responses. Update after Care.com's response: The company's response to this review unfortunately illustrates one of the central issues I described above. After detailing the confusing cancellation experience, the renewal dispute, the repeated scripted customer service interactions, the FTC enforcement action that raised similar concerns, and the months spent attempting to resolve the matter, Care.com's response was simply a generic statement that they were "sorry to hear" about my experience and that they would "share the feedback with the appropriate teams." Notably, the response does not address a single issue raised in the review. It does not address the cancellation process, the renewal dispute, the customer service experience, the refusal to provide a goodwill refund, or the concerns regarding the FTC's prior findings. Prospective customers should understand that if they encounter a billing or cancellation issue, they may receive the same type of scripted, non-specific response rather than a meaningful attempt to address the underlying concern. At this point, my concern is no longer the $165.65 charge itself. It is the apparent unwillingness to engage substantively with legitimate customer concerns, even after multiple escalations and public reviews.
