I have severe arthritis in my hands. The cartilage at the base of my left thumb is completely gone. Besides the injection I received in the area, my hand surgeon recommended this special brace to keep my thumb immobile. It has helped to reduce the pain greatly. Also, I can feel that my right thumb is going down the same path, so I have already purchased this brace for the right thumb. This design helps let the fingers free to have more use of them. I bought both the right and left brace to help with the osteoarthritis in my thumbs. The braces helped relieve the pain in my hands right away, holding my thumbs in a way that relieved the pressure on the affected joints. I am also able to use my hands for daily life, like cooking and painting, with the braces holding the thumb joints in place so this activity doesn't hurt. They rub a bit when typing, but for some reason my thumbs aren't bothered so much with that, so I've been taking the braces off for that. I deducted a star because the straps on the back are (I think unnecessarily) stiff and scratchy, which is not helpful with the thin skin on the back of my hands. I need to think of a way to cushion them, but surely the company might do that first. Despite the stiff and scratchy straps on the back of my hand, I recommend these braces as an excellent and well made method of pain relief for my arthritic thumbs without medication that still allows my to use my hands in pretty much all my daily tasks. And they are washable, so if they get stuff on them from cooking or painting (I'm an artist), they are easily cleaned. ** Edited to say that I changed this to 5 stars instead of 4. I decided that the scratchy back straps did not merit a 20% reduction in the rating. I’m really happy that this brace is available because it makes a huge difference in my quality of life. I’m going to try some padding under the straps to see if that helps.
