It has been horrifying and fascinating trying to understand the logic of this company. My editor is no loner and my data was stolen. I would self publish before getting involved with these people.

Atmosphere Press is a best-in-class ethics-forward hybrid publisher dedicated to honesty, transparency, professionalism, kindness, and making your book awesome. Atmosphere Press also sponsors a free author interview series, a free writing residency in Costa Rica, a free book giveaway program, and donate to charitable causes including the World Literacy Foundation and the Inside Books Project. They are selective in the books they sign on, offering contracts only to authors vetted via a manuscript review and exploratory phone call. Be careful of this company. From the very beginning, the team made one mistake after the other. My original text docs and photo files were perfectly numbered and ordered, and I included detailed instructions about text and placement of images, yet on two separate occasions, they used wrong images an captions, even though my notes to them showed them correctly. Finally, after a few months of going back and forth, they used an old text file (instead of the recently edited one) to do the layout. That's when I contacted the owner, but he, in return, blamed the whole thing on me instead of apologizing and taking responsibility to correct his company's mistake. He decided to "terminate" my contract; he kept almost $1,500 of my money, and he returned the same amount. His correspondences and his attitude were arrogant, cocky, and unprofessional. And nobody ever bothered to offer an apology for messing up the manuscript by using old files which were named and dated as previous versions. The whole experience was terribly unprofessional, unethical, and downright nasty. There is very little direct communication from author to the others involved in the project, and their contractors are all over the world, making the process laborious and impersonal. In the end, I took his partial refund and I gladly moved on to self-publishing with Ingram and amazon. Instead of their high-priced marketing packages, I did it all myself, to great results. It's taken me over one year to leave this review. The owner Nick can say whatever he wants in response, but I'm here to tell you to be wary of this company.

It was a difficult experience for us, working with Bob. In January 2024, Bob became (and still remains) the only author in our 10-year history that we canceled a contract with, because he was creating such a burden on our team that it was unfair to our other authors. Though Bob here claims that we made many errors---and we take ownership for any errors we did make, and we did then as well---it's notable that at the time, Bob argued against the contract termination, because he wanted to continue working with us. But we really had no choice but to discontinue the relationship, as it was going to be best for both sides. We granted him a refund in excess of what he was contractually owed, and any funds we did retain from him were for services already rendered. We did wish Bob well with his book, and are happy to hear that it's gone well for him. But given how happy so many of our authors are---you can tell, just by reading these reviews---it was truly for the best that we part ways with Bob. In the end, we're a publisher that wants an ideal outcome for both sides. Like any relationship, if it's clear that it's not positive for both sides, it's best to separate and move forward independently. That's what we chose in this situation, and from what Bob says about his book's success after working with us, it's clear that we made the right decision.

A rather unethical approach to tout custom.Addendum in the light of Atmosphere's reply to my review. Atmosphere Press may have justified rave reviews, however personally I find their approach rather unethical. I spun the wheel received in their email and won an author's interview. I have already published a book and whatever work is i progress is just that - still work in progress. In any case, I completed the interview questionnaire, hoping they may pick up my book "I couldn't help it if I tried" and add it to their catalogue. What I received back was my "publishing contract" giving me three options of parting with money to pay to them. The first totalled $ 6600 - just under £ 5000 (UK). I was shocked and asked them to take me off their mailing list immediately. Atmosphere did reply, informing me tht their website was transparent where their fees are concerned, That may be so but I had not visited their website. I spun Atmosphere's wheel as suggested by Writers on line to win prizes to help with writing . So, for the record, I was not offered an author's interview as such, I WON IT BY SPINNING THE WHEEL AND YES, IT WAS FREE BECAUSE IT WAS A PRIZE.

Hi, Cornelia! We're sorry you don't like our approach, but we're actually fully devoted to transparency. Our pricing and contract are clearly available on our website, and we indeed did offer to interview you about your book for free. We'll be wishing you well in the future!

I was congratulated by this typical American Vanity Press scam company for sending my successfull manuscript ready for pulishing. The problem was, I had only sent a synopsis. If you want to give your money away, I have a timeshare to sell you.
Response from Atmosphere PressSep 25, 2024
Hajnal, I want to clarify that Atmosphere Press is not a vanity press. We are a selective literary press that values building genuine, authentic relationships with authors and maintaining high standards for the work we publish. Our process involves a preliminary review of submissions (including synopses), followed by the option to discuss our publication packages in more detail. The financial investment we require is for specific services that go beyond traditional publishing, such as additional marketing and promotional support. We understand if this isn’t the right fit for everyone and respect your decision. Best of luck!

Selling books is a hard business. Atmosphere Press doesn't make it easier. Their paid-for marketing services is not great; furthermore their book boost team will make you do all the heavy lifting. Their website design is atrocious and costly. You will likely be in the red if you publish with Atmosphere, though the exception would be if you are a much more talented sales person than writer.

I appreciate your honest feedback, David. Selling books is indeed a tough business, and it sounds like our services didn’t meet your expectations. I will say, marketing was just a small part of what we did for your book. Your book’s design, as just one example, is great. Our goal is to support authors in a meaningful way not just with publicity that helps with reviews, ad traffic, and local strategies, but also with editorial, layout, and with author websites that many authors have appreciated and proudly maintained for years. All of this requires close collaboration with authors - we’re sorry if that felt burdensome. Thank you for sharing your thoughts - they’re important for us as we strive to improve our services every day.

They are worse than being a Vanity Press they are SCAMMERS! I'm only glad I didn't pay them $5,700 up front to produce my poetry book; a huge amount of money. But I have been suckered into paying them $1,000 for their non existent 'Book boost publicity & promotion' package nearly 3 weeks ago with not a word back from them. I live in the UK, I've tried filing a complaint against them thru the BBB: Better Business Bureau, the US equivalent of our Trading Standards, I tried filing my complaint online yesterday but kept getting the 500 error message instead, I even tried to share a review on there but kept on getting the error message back. I'm at my wits end, I don't want to let them get away with it but I don't know who else to turn to now for help?
Response from Atmosphere PressSep 12, 2024
Philip, thank you so much for the newer 5-star review you left! We’re glad to see that you’ve continued to work with our team on your latest work, Dying of Lassitude and Ennui. If you have a moment, would you consider updating or deleting this older and outdated review to reflect the positive relationship we’ve built together? It would mean a lot to us.

After reading reviews that confirmed Atmosphere Press as a vanity press that demands money for publishing, I hesitantly decided to give it a try. I contacted them and met all their demands, even sending a sample of my manuscript. Despite their impressed response, I couldn't shake the feeling that they were just a vanity press. Nonetheless, I continued playing along and responding to their emails. One day, I received an interesting email asking how much I was prepared to contribute financially. Without hesitation, I selected the option of no contribution. The very next day, I received undeniable proof that Atmosphere Press is indeed a dubious publisher. They stated in their email, and I quote, "We received your Next Round Consideration Form, and we loved everything you had to say. Our publication packages require a financial investment, though, and because you stated that you do not want to invest in this project, it seems we might not be the best fit for you. Is that correct?" If you are seeking traditional publishers, I strongly advise against wasting your time with money-seeking companies like Atmosphere Press. Rest assured, if your book holds value and is deserving of publication, it will eventually find its way without any financial burdens. Keep searching for authentic traditional publishers.

Congratulations on taking nearly nine (9) months to reply to my review!!! Proves my point don't you think?! ============ I submitted two manuscripts today. I received an email within a couple of hours saying "Glad to hear from you! I saw you resubmitted your book, and I was happy to see your name in the queue again. If you're interested in pursuing publication with our hybrid publishing model, schedule a chat with me, or send me a note, about making this book a reality!" So it was immediately apparent that they had not read my submissions; it would certainly take longer than the time it took them to reply. They simply want you to arrange a chat so they can talk you in to paying for your publication. I cannot see how it can be read any other way. They want you to pay. I replied and told them it was not a resubmission. They replied "Got it! I will take a look......." So it confirmed my belief that they don't give a monkies about your work, they are not a serious publisher and cannot be trusted to evaluate your work. Extremely disappointed, but more fool me for thinking they would take the time to read my work and consider publishing. Their marketing emails are full of false hopes. Very disappointing. If they choose to challenge this review, I would be more than happy to discuss it with them. They had my number, but never called, so why should they now?!?!

Thank you for your feedback. I do believe you’ve misunderstood our process and who we are at Atmosphere Press. We genuinely care about our authors and their work - otherwise, we wouldn’t be in this business. Relationship building is at the core of what we do. After a quick review of submitted manuscripts, we offer authors the opportunity to schedule a free discovery call to discuss their work in more detail and see if we’d be a good fit for partnership. We’re always straightforward with authors about payment structure, as our contract and packages are transparent on our website. Further vetting of the manuscript occurs after the call is scheduled, and as the conversation progresses. Unfortunately, without your full name or email address, we’re unable to look into your specific case further or address your concerns directly. If you’d like, please reach out to us with more details so we can better understand and resolve the issue: [email protected]
