ONE OF THE WORST CAR RENTAL EXPERIENCES…
ONE OF THE WORST CAR RENTAL EXPERIENCES I’VE EVER HAD I booked America Car Rental IAH through Orbitz for a weekend trip to Houston. The price was extremely cheap and tempting, so I booked and paid upfront. The problems started the night before my trip. I received late night text messages requiring me to complete a “mandatory” verification, including uploading my driver’s license and proof of insurance. I completed the process, even though I found it unusual. When I arrived at IAH on Friday, I called for the airport pickup and was told I had to complete the verification again. After doing it a second time, I provided my terminal and door number and waited outside. About 15 minutes later, a different number started texting me asking for the same information. Eventually, an unbadged driver arrived. He told me he was only the driver and needed to pick up another customer from another terminal. After picking up the other customer, we were driven to a Ramada hotel, not a normal airport rental facility. The driver dropped us off and left us to find the rental office ourselves. The other customer was elderly, so I let him go first. The clerk/manager, Jenny, then told me to wait outside until she finished with him. I waited over 30 minutes. I eventually went inside and explained that I had a conference to attend and was already running late. Her response was extremely rude. She told me she didn't know how long it would take and ordered me to leave the office. About 20 minutes later, the other customer walked out and said to me: “She is all yours. Good luck. You’re gonna need it.” When I finally went inside, Jenny asked for my driver's license. She looked at me and said: "You need to be humbled. So apologize to me.” I explained that I had already been waiting for about an hour and needed to get to my conference. Instead of resolving the situation, she dropped my driver's license and said: “I have cancelled your reservation with no refund.” She then walked into the back office and locked the door. I was shocked. I had paid upfront, completed their verification twice, waited over an hour, and was now left without a rental and without my money. The other customer was still outside. He told me they had continued adding fees to his rental until the total was around $700, and he decided not to rent from them. While we were trying to get back to the airport, another customer arrived who was also planning to rent from America Car Rental. The taxi driver told her he routinely warns customers to read the reviews before going there because of similar experiences he has seen with other passengers. After hearing what happened to us, she decided not to rent from them either. All three of us ended up going back to the airport and renting from a major national rental company. From the time we arrived at the rental center to getting our keys took less than 10 minutes. Looking back, I honestly believe I dodged a bullet when my reservation was cancelled. My biggest question is for Orbitz and Expedia: Why continue offering this company on your platforms despite the overwhelming number of negative customer experiences? I strongly recommend reading the reviews before booking. I wish I had. The cheap price was absolutely not worth the headache.
