Run for your life - EDITED
EDITED TO ADD Dec 23 2025: Olivier of 1040 Abroad reached out and paid the penalties on the late fees incurred due to my case falling through the cracks in their process. He mentioned that regardless of my review, he wanted to make things right. As a business owner, I fully understand that mistakes happen. I wanted to take a moment and acknowledge my appreciation for businesses like these with integrity. ----------------------------------------------------------- I had used 1040 Abroad in 2024 as a US citizen living abroad full time. Things went well so I decided to use them again for 2025. Biggest mistake I ever made. Note that I have NEVER been late in filing my taxes. This all happened despite an onboarding call PRIOR to doing my taxes. I had explained before hand that my taxes are complicated for 2025 due to living in two countries, sale of properties and running two separate businesses. Let me save you the pain. 1. I submitted my taxes at least a month in advance like I normally do. 1040 gave me literally 2 days before the deadline to confirm and file my taxes even though I had asked for it the week before. 2. There were zero questions asked despite the sale and purchase of multiple properties and including the sale of my primary home which would allow for a 250k deduction. This was not included in my taxes. 3. The taxes I owed were astronomical due to #2 above. 4. They asked me, the client a basic non-negotiable tax filing question on which tax option I wanted to file (with K1 or without K1?) - When I asked for a second opinion, my usually polite and calm US based business accountant wrote back to me: "That’s the dumbest damn question ever. You HAVE TO FILE with the K1." 5. My taxes were filed late due to this back and forth with zero guidance on what to do. 6. I now owe thousands in late fees. I can't even begin to tell you how incompetent these people are. And they only have ONE job to do: Taxes for citizens living abroad. You truly can't make this stuff up.
Response from 1040 AbroadOct 31, 2025
We’re disappointed to see this review, as it contains multiple inaccuracies and misrepresents the facts of this client’s case. The client first contacted us before the April 15 IRS payment deadline. However, despite several follow-ups, she failed to provide the necessary information in a timely or complete manner, repeatedly stating that she “had a business to run.” Without the required details, it was not possible to finalize her return before the payment due date. For clarity, U.S. tax payments are always due by April 15, regardless of when the return is filed. The IRS automatically applies penalties and interest when taxes are paid after that date. This timing is determined by law, not by the tax preparer. At the client’s own request, we prepared two versions of the return: one including the K-1 income and one excluding it. To be absolutely clear, K-1 income is required by law to be reported. We prepared both versions solely because the client explicitly asked us to do so during our initial call. We would never omit any income or modify a return in a way that violates IRS rules. We have complete written records, email correspondence, and call notes verifying all of the above. These can be shared in redacted form with anyone who wishes to confirm the facts. Our firm stands by the accuracy and professionalism of our work. We do not take lightly when a client misrepresents events publicly. This review reflects a misunderstanding of IRS payment deadlines, a misstatement of the facts regarding the K-1, and the client’s own delays.
