SEFCU unethically stole money from my account
I had been with SEFCU for over 30 years. I've never had problems until the last few years. There was an issue regarding an accidental overdraft by just a few dollars but I didn't realize it (a check was cashed one day before my deposit). I logged in after a few days to find almost $200 in overdraft fees. They were just charging me overdraft fees daily and the overdraft fees ended up taking all my deposit and then I was over drawn on the account again so they kept charging overdraft fees. I get that there's a policy and it was originally my fault but they never told me or sent me any notifications so they just kept charging me fees which depleted my account and they never told me about it. No notifications, no messages, no calls, no texts no emails. Radio silent. It was clear that they were doing that intentionally so that they could just keep charging me the fees. I called and they graciously returned half of the fees, balancing my account. I thought it was an isolated incident and everything went smoothly for the next year or so, but then lo and behold, I had moved my banking elsewhere but kept my account just in case I needed it more and I recently opened my SEFCU account and saw that AGAIN, they had been withdrawing a "dormancy fee" from my account over the last 5 months. Thankfully I had enough to cover the fees but man, what unethical, sneaky, disgusting behavior. I got no reminders, no notifications, nothing. Radio silent again. Had I not happened to check my account, I would have been overdrawn again and gotten overdraft fees on top of the "dormancy fees". I guess 30 years of loyalty means nothing to them. They mistreated me, stole my money and now they've lost a loyal customer. I decided to close my account and during the chat with the customer service rep I asked if I can recover some of the money they stole. I was told that I should have known the policies. I said that I've been with SEFCU for 30 years. Why didn't anyone contact me regarding the policy change. She just lied and said that they did notify me. They didn't of course. Where's the customer service? Where's the grace and understanding that not everyone will remember all the policies for 30 years? Why no reminders? Just a quick "Hey, just a warning your account has incurred an overdraft fee. You may want to make a deposit soon." No notifications just seems unethical, a way for them to just steal your money and then blame the customer. I can't think of any other explanation for not notifying me other than secrecy to milk more money from their customers. It just feels so disrespectful and unethical. I don't do business with companies who treat their loyal customers like this. Add to all of that, increased popups, annoying ads to take out loans, etc. becomes really annoying and distasteful. For those reasons, I'm out.
