Did not receive a good quality engine
I ordered an engine which took about 3 weeks to get here. Once it showed up, I carefully inspected this engine to make sure that it was a good quality candidate for my 4Runner. Upon inspection I found that the engine was burning quite a bit of oil at one point. The exhaust ports had a lot of oil residual and carbon build up. I removed the intake plenum and poured out a bunch of water. There was a ton of rusty water sitting in the valley. The intake valves were also caked in carbon build up. I turned the engine over by hand to make sure it wasn’t seized. While turning the engine over I kept hearing a gurgling sound so I was watching as I’m turning the engine over, there were water bubbles and air pushing past the intake and exhaust valves on 4 of the cylinders during the compression stroke. On jdm engine zones website it says “All of our engines are carefully inspected for excellent compression, leakdown, and overall proper performance guaranteed” This was clearly not the case. I drained the old oil (and water), pulled the spark plugs and turned the engine upside down on my engine stand to get rid of any water trapped in the cylinders. There was quite a bit of rusty water that came out of 2 of the cylinders. I removed the oil pan and the internals definitely looked like there was poor maintenance done. It did not appear to be a low mileage engine at all. I removed the valve covers, one of the cylinder heads appeared to have been replaced at one point as the internals were a lot cleaner than the rest of the engine. I removed the cylinder heads to just replace all of the gaskets to make sure this thing will just run and be reliable but it turns out that removing the cylinder heads voids the warranty on this engine. I reached out to jdm and reported my findings and they were pretty much telling me to go screw myself. I had to just cut my losses at this point. I assumed the block was still in good shape so I purchased new cylinder heads and slapped them on there as well as replacing every single gasket and o-ring. Btw for jdm to honor a warranty, you have to install the block and heads as is and replace everything around them. If you replace head gaskets it voids the warranty. As this was my only vehicle, time was pressing to get my vehicle back up and running. I should have just went with my gut and ordered from jasper engines. It would have cost me the same amount of money for an engine with more peace of mind.
