The website would have you believe that you can prepare and file clients' taxes for free. There are multiple parts of the website that state it is free, but once you sign up there isn't a single way to actual file anyone's taxes. They want you to use (and pay crazy money) AI credits to do the taxes for you. If your website advertises the AI as optional, it SHOULD BE OPTIONAL. Don't even bother.

I run a CPA firm with offices in California and Florida. For the past filing season we signed an agreement with Instead to prepare 125 tax returns under a committed volume and paid for all 125 in advance. Instead delivered 17. My own staff prepared the other 108 during the busiest weeks of the year to protect client deadlines, which is the exact problem we hired Instead to solve. At season end I asked for a refund of the fees for the 108 returns Instead never prepared. They refused to refund any portion of it. In my judgment that is a vendor keeping fees for work it did not perform. If you run a firm and are evaluating Instead, get the committed volume, the turnaround standard, and a pro rata refund for nondelivery into the contract before you sign. Then ask for references from firms that completed a full season with them. We will not use Instead again and I would not recommend them to anyone.

This company is truly laughable and false advertise. On their website it says you can use their platform to prepare taxes for free and is unlimited. If you want AI to do it, then it’s a pay-per-credit. Seems straightforward, until you schedule a demo. During the demo they are saying their lowest package is $25k A YEAR. Because they’re not just a tax software but a tax “ecosystem”. You can plan, prep, research, and do resolution in the platform. However, with their resolution side, you can’t pull transcripts, you can’t prepare back taxes, and it doesn’t do intake. You can get the top softwares in each of those categories and still pay less! I truly laughed in the guy face. Don’t waste your time. So there is no pay per agent, they use that to get you to schedule a demo to try and get you to pay $25k a year for their beta product that just launched this year. It looks like an enhanced ChatGPT in which ChatGPT is one of their agents lol.
