Factory Quality Control Severely Lacking IMHO
I have previously owned and enjoyed 2017 and 2020 Indian Roadmasters. I found both bikes to be well built and reliable (except when the 2020 one suffered an engine shut down during a group ride a long way from home – the issue proved to be a loose battery terminal connection, which took a while to resolve in the field).
After recently test riding a 2023 Indian Pursuit, which confirmed the hype and experiences of my riding buddies regarding comfort and amazing handling, I traded in my 2020 Roadmaster for a brand new 2026 Indian Pursuit Limited, which is also getting rave reviews for technology and setting the standard for touring motorcycles. However, with not even 350 miles on it, I’ve already experienced the following:
(1) Failure to start normally when at ambient temperature. After 4 attempts, where the bike starts, but then stalls after a split second, I need to open throttle a bit for it to catch and run (which the Indian Owner’s Manual advises not to do). The dealership has advised me that another customer who also bought a 2026 Pursuit two weeks after I did is experiencing the same problem. Misery loves company.
(2) Grinding/rubbing noise from rear that varies with bike speed, not engine rpm…a drive belt issue perhaps?
(3) Diagnostic code registered for clutch system malfunction, although clutch operable.
Here’s what’s happened so far to resolve the:
(1) Hard starting issue. The dealership service department, under Factory directive, has reset the ECU (didn’t resolve), inspected for air intake leaks (found none), and is now replacing the TLG (torque limiting gear), which the Dealership Service Advisor informed me requires removing the exhaust pipes. During that exhaust pipe removal process, they found that the exhaust system was installed improperly, resulting in an exhaust leak – which they suspected might be part of the hard starting problem. The Service Advisor informed me that they would need to install a brand new exhaust system, which they said the Factory would ship to them…but as it turns out not using overnight express. So now I have to wait several days for the service techs to receive and install it. Where’s the urgency here, Indian? You have an unhappy customer with a brand new bike that can’t enjoy it because you messed up.
(2) Grinding/rubbing noise. The Service Advisor informed me that they found the drive belt too tight (i.e., as shipped from the Factory), and would adjust it to proper specs. They are confident that this eliminate the noise.
(3) Clutch diagnostic code. A Service Tech informed me that the loop in a wire coming from the clutch lever housing was too tight, and might be shorting out. Film at 11 on that one.
Since I took possession of the bike, it has been in the shop for 13 out of 30 days (43% of the time), which is ridiculous for a brand new ~$40K motorcycle.
Indian has a marketing video about their factory in Spirit Lake, IA, which presents the tag line: “Each bike is made with craftsmanship and passion.”. Well, I’m not seeing that here. Some of what the video itself also states regarding quality I would disagree with as well.
I hope that my bike does not prove to be a certifiable “lemon”, which would therefore cause me to pursue “Pursuit” relief under Washington state lemon laws. Maybe I need to jump the Indian ship and buy a Honda Gold Wing?

I loved this website
I loved this website. It was easy to navigate, well organized. Makes it very easy to look at the accessories for my motorcycle and the ability to check out the inventory at my local dealer.
