Hakko Anti Right to Repair
Hakko, a company recognized for its quality electronics repair tools like soldering irons and hot air rework stations, is trusted by professionals and hobbyists alike. Unfortunately, they’ve taken a stance against the Right to Repair. Despite my repeated requests for repair documents and firmware, their response has remained dismissive: “We’ll only comply if legally required.” As of July 1, 2024, California law mandates Right to Repair compliance under SB244. However, Hakko has instead pursued a strategy of “malicious compliance,” twisting definitions, fabricating terms, and omitting critical language like “includes, but not limited to” to evade fully supporting independent repair—directly undermining the law’s intent and purpose. While Hakko themselves offer parts and servicing options, those of us who depend on this equipment to repair electronics professionally need the ability to service it ourselves. Relying solely on manufacturers for minor fixes or firmware updates can be both costly and time-consuming, especially when proper documentation would enable faster, more efficient repairs and updates.
