I went to Dr Ashraf for liposuction of…
I went to Dr Ashraf for liposuction of my abdomen and fat transfer to my breasts after reading his recommendations. The consultation went well, and I decided to proceed with the surgery. Dr Ashraf came to see me in my hospital room immediately before the surgery with a cast on his right hand/arm. He assured me that his broken hand would not be an obstacle because he performs liposuction with his left hand. I should have reconsidered the surgery at that point, but I was shocked and stressed and did not feel able to make a clear decision, so I chose to trust him and proceed. The surgery took several hours longer than I had been told it would. The only explanation I received was that “my fat was difficult to remove.” I am a slim person and only had relatively small areas of stubborn fat. I was never given a satisfactory explanation for why the procedure took so many hours. Soon after the surgery, I discovered that something was wrong with my bladder and anus. I suddenly had external hemorrhoids and had problems holding my urine. I cannot say with certainty what caused these problems, but I was concerned that the amount of pressure placed on my abdominal area during the procedure may have contributed to them. I feel fortunate that I did not suffer more serious internal injuries and with time my anus and bladder healed. When the compression garment was removed after one week, we discovered that the tissue on my abdomen had become completely separated from the underlying muscles, extending across the abdomen and also into the lower back. This made my recovery much longer and very painful. The resulting spaces repeatedly filled with fluid and had to be drained several times which was very painful. I also developed large blisters on both sides of my abdomen. Dr Ashraf did not provide me with an explanation for why they had occurred, and they eventually left scars. There was foam underneath the compression garment. I was subsequently told by a chemical engineer that this was industrial foam containing substances that should not be in direct contact with skin, and that it could pose a health risk. I found this extremely concerning. I have also requested copies of my medical records and surgical files from Dr Ashraf and/or the clinic a number of times. Despite these repeated requests, I have not been provided with my medical records. My understanding is that I have a legal right to access my medical records and that refusing to provide them may constitute a violation of the applicable law. After the surgery, I also felt that Dr Ashraf’s behaviour towards me changed and became overly familiar, which made me very uncomfortable. Knowing that he had seen me naked during the procedure caused me significant anxiety, and I became increasingly distressed about attending follow-up appointments. Eventually, I stopped going. The fat transfer did not take, and once I had finally healed, the result of the liposuction was uneven. I ultimately had revision surgery with another surgeon. Overall, this was an extremely distressing experience, both physically and psychologically, and the recovery was far more difficult than I had expected.
