I use the website often (now that I'm a homeowner - it has been very so valuable). First - a description of ConsumerCheckbook: They ask subscribers for their honest impressions/ratings for any services (roofing, plumbing, doctors, dentists, car dealer, auto repair, electricians .. a LOT of services). No advertisements. (verified user review - similar to TrustPilot, but focusing on the geographic region (eg SF Bay Area) and lists all the providers of XYZ service with price/quality and other metrics in an easy to use table that I can sort in different ways. (plus the areas that each provider services - since the Bay Area is rather large.) In addition, they provide comprehensive articles about (example) what is involved with roof repair /replacement. They describe the basic terms/construction of different types of roof, what to look for when evaluating a quote, what to be sure the service person is providing, etc.. So far the reviews I've read (from people like me) are very helpful. I compare the info I find on ConsumerCheckbook with reviews on GoogleMaps. I am surprised to read the two negative reviews, and sorry about the problem one person had with the digital subscription. I understand they are very understaffed, funding from the subscriptions is minimal, so the print edition was probably a burden. The magazine is going all digital later this year, so I guess I'll find out what that's like. However, while I liked the print version, I found that didn't really use it. I most often log into the website to look for articles and reviews about very specific services. In the last 12 months I've used their Dentist survey and plumber survey; also have used carpet cleaning, roof repair, and I forget what else. Date of experience "many for many years".. so.. just randomly selecting most recent - which was today! For appliance repair.
