Forget Social Media And YouTube
The only reason why I continue to pay for their (Calyx) service is not because it is good, but due to the fact it is the only affordable option. I'm not paying over $100/mo for Starlink and traditional mobile hotspot plans are not worth it to be capped at 2G speeds for most of the billing cycle. First off, Calyx institute is getting unlimited internet from a non-profit agreement. This sounds good and you think to yourself I don't need 100Mbps, I'm happy with 25, the problem is from T-Mobile's side you are the bottom of the barrel. You are what they called deprioritized. Even prepaid T-Mobile plans at $15/mo are higher than you. This means expect a lack of quality of service. Secondly, T-Mobile uses a "carrier-grade NAT" (CGNAT) which means you share an IP address with large blocks of people. This means that when multiple people access the same resource (let's say Google/YouTube/Facebook/Instagram) some of their systems detect this system as suspicious or bot like. It is expecting a unique IP for each individual user, but now all of a sudden it's getting flooded with requests from the same IP, hence you get CONSTANTLY annoyed with CAPTCHA requests, or Cloudflare asking you to validate you. That's not the worst part of it. Sometimes it just outright BANS your social media account due to this behavior. Nothing you did wrong, just poof gone. Ok, so I'll just use a free VPN service like Proton VPN. Nope, sorry. I tried that. Those IPs are exhausted beyond belief, they still get flagged. Bitmask or CalyxVPN suffers from the same blacklisting issue since its a massively shared IP. Forget pretty much any low-tier free or paid VPNs that offer limited protection against this. You would need something like NordVPN or Surfshark which offers a dedicated static IP address for $3.75/mo as of 7/31/2026 which is an additional cost on top of your standard subscription. So right around $100/yr (50 for VPN, 50 for static). That would bump your overall Internet cost of ownership to have both calyx and a static VPN to $50/mo. Or you can just quit using social media, your choice. Lastly, YouTube while playable suffers from the same deprioritization issue. Since you are at the bottom of the totem pole, bandwidth gets throttled to 1.5Mb/s MAX which only conservatively offers you 480P with no buffering, or 720P if you are somewhat willing to watch in chunks. The most frustrating part of all of this is this aggressive spam/bot protection system caused me to lose all of my social media accounts (they were either outright banned or shadow banned) due to them thinking I was spam. Support has been absolutely pointless at getting anything restored because I am not an influencer and just a nobody. So I gave up on social media. The whole point of getting Calyx for me was to share my adventures as I live out of my truck camper and travel the country. Now I'll likely look for other avenues like photo sharing services (flickr for example) to document my adventures.
