Baselang teacher had affair with my husband and now marrying him
Baselang promised their teachers would never share information or form personal relationship with their students. My ex-husband is now marrying his Baselang teacher. He was an alcoholic who had just joined AA and gotten sober. He asked for lessons to learn Spanish. He had an emotional affair with his instructor and left me for her after 30+ years together. I found out that they had been having a relationship through the baselang lessons. He flew to see her two weeks after he left me and they are now getting married. How do you compete with someone younger, prettier and always perfect online? Very sad. My kids are devastated. The financial devastation was awful and I basically paid for him to have an affair as I paid his Baselang subscription so although they promise it's secure, it's not. The teachers can work around their rules and have relationships with the students.

Warning: scheduling is dysfunctional
Once you find a reliable instructor that matches your style and preferences, the biggest challenge is scheduling. Instructors are assigned by Baselang to projects, special lessons, take vacation with no notice to students, etc. so you're into a routine, and he /she is no longer available to be scheduled. The support desk claims (lies) that no one can jump in front of the open schedule time (2pm Eastern), but how can all spots for an instructor be unavailable the second signups start?
Scheduling is my biggest beef. I've been forced to find a new instructor multiple times, so hard to get continuity.
That, coupled with a new system in 2023, which caused data loss (which they refuse to fix, forcing me to spend more repeating lessons) and new material with plenty of errors ... Shakey offer.
I haven't explored other options until now, but I'm starting.
Update Feb7, 2024.
I don't know what is going on at Baselang, but it's becoming increasingly difficult to find instructors. Yes, they will offer a person, but you have review for time and style fit. Why is it when you find a great instructor that you can no longer book them?
For someone who doesn't want to interrupt their day and spend 10-30 minutes each day bidding for a 30 minute lesson, I'd recommend finding a service with a better booking system.
Otoh. If you just want someone to talk to at random, this is the place.

Hi Cooper,
I understand your frustration with the scheduling, but I can assure you that everyone is in the same boat and there are no students who have extra privileges to "skip the line" and book ahead of you. Classes are booked on a first come first served basis, but might not be perfect, but it's at least a fair system that ensures everyone is booking from the same starting point. The experience you mentioned is likely due to the fact that students will often be waiting for the second slots open to book classes, and they manage to do it quicker than other students.
In saying that, we will try to do a better job of letting students know when a teacher does go on vacation or is unavailable due to unforeseen circumstances.
We're sorry for the inconvenience caused by the migration to the new platform in 2023 - it was a bit bumpier than we had anticipated, but I'm happy to say that we have ironed all most of the bugs and now have a far superior platform going forward .
Appreciate you leaving this feedback and helping us improve :)

Hi Gary, you accidentally signed up for classes at our in-person school in Medellin. When you contacted our customer service team, we immediately issued a refund and canceled your subscription. I don't think we could have done anything more to help you in this case.

They discriminate against women…
They discriminate against women employees. They fired a teacher for no reason after she came back from her maternity leave. So now, she can't find a job because nobody won't hire a woman with a baby. This is totally illegal and nobody does anything about it.
Response from BaseLangAug 21, 2025
Hi Carmen - this is not true.
The majority of our staff are female, and so we value equality for all of our employees. Your comment relates to a teacher who was dismissed because she was helping a competitor poach students from our platform. For obvious reasons, we were left with no choice but to dismiss this teacher.

Hi Matty - I know we're super late replying to this, but we have been some BIG changes since this review.
Including adding 24/7 availability.
If you'd like to try BaseLang again, just email [email protected] and we'll make things right :)

Baselang was a waste of time
I was taking lessons every day for four months. Then in January they could no longer offer classes during the times that I needed. I used to be able to schedule same day or for tomorrow, but not anymore. They were now scheduling five days out. This caused many problems and I had to stop taking the lessons because I could not get the times that I needed.
This led to more problems. Because I was not able to continue the lessons, I began to forget many of the things that I learned. Eventually the four months that I spent with Baselang were a waste of time and I had wasted my money.
Learning a language means that you must continue unabated and uninterrupted. But if something happens or changes that causes you to have to stop, then you will begin to forget everything and your entire experience will have been wasted. And your money spent will be wasted.
Baselang ruined everything because they could not continue the lessons. Stay away from this terrible company that is poorly managed.

Hope they improve
It could be a good experience for others, but teachers are terribly paid. It's unbelievable the low amount of money for people living in such a country. I hope it would exist as an option tipping your favorite teachers.
Edit: Poor Internet connection but teachers try their best. It's common to have re-scheduled classes because of this problem. However, you can find some great teachers. Despite the unethical payment they are getting, the classes are well delivered.
