Well I joined this site because I was bored and wanted to help people. Glad I didnt come here for help. There are some good people but mostly it felt like a cult disguised as a self help site. The listeners are not really professionals. The therapists are not there for individuals as they need so they are forced to settle with the non professional listeners and peers. So ok then if it is not professional then it is casual then right? Nope. Why I say that is the cult like atmosphere where you have the option to take oaths so they can mold you to think and speak the way they want you to. The only way to get the leadership to talk to you is to violate the site’s terms. If you dont violate a term and instead have a complaint is if you fill a form that is metaphorically tossed into a pile. Recently they made a rule stating that only Lgbtq can post flags but others are not allowed. That is discrimination to those that identify themselves with a culture or national identity. Doesnt that violate the very rules of their site aimed at promoting acceptance, love, and inclusiveness lol? If they are willing to violate someones right to their own personal, national, and cultural identity what else would they be willing to violate? They censor big time on this site. The curse word thing I understand but not being able to post ones social media? Forgive me God for I have sinned lol. I suggest that instead of joining this site get some real professional help if you need help. If you are lonely and just want friends there are other social sites. Please stay away from here unless you want to be brainwashed to follow the crowd and do as you are told.

BOILING OVER GARBAGE! HOT SINKING FECES!
So, @ASilentObserver requested I review 7 Cups on this website. Okay! I give it a whole 1 star. The moderators are jerks, like super jerks. Most are mental as batsh!t, and given powers over others brings out the absolute worst of the worst within them. Don't even dare to question them! Don't have a sense of humor. Don't criticize, condemn, or complain! Don't point out their errors, they have no flesh or skin, just raw nerves. And the leadership throughout the site is reminiscent of an overflowing port-a-potty. People are abandoning this dumpster fire for greener pastures, and so in the spirit of Glen Moriarty I suggest you >listen< to this review and go elsewhere for your mental health needs. Some place people actually listen would be great.

Waste of Money
I used 7 cups for 3 months. You get one message a day, and often that message is simply "oh that sounds hard" and "how was your day". During my third month, my therapist was very non-responsive. She missed my first couple messages, then left on vacation. For $300 I had a total of 8 messages from her, including "sorry I missed these" and "hello I'm back" taking up a quarter of them. When I asked 7 cups to refund part or all of the month, after 2 weeks they responded suggesting to switch therapists, which I declined, and after 6 weeks they finally messaged me back to say that since the therapist has been paid there's nothing they will do. So basically this company pretends to be for the customer, but is really only concerned with lining their pockets regardless of the service you've gotten. I wasted almost a grand on this company that's left me feeling like less of a human than when I started out.

Critical review of 7 cups (2025)
Initially, this was a prompted review of 7cups. However, I have updated it along the way to reflect the downsides of this system, after gaining experience in professional settings offline.
7cups is a great website for people seeking to be heard. The fluid access and relatively quick pickup for support have proved to become a staple hallmark, particularly during the COVID-19 isolation. Pickup times however do fluctuate. It continues to be a good medium for those wanting to be heard during a post-COVID era.
Over the 5-6 years since I first started coming onto 7 cups, it has retained its main function of virtual social connection. However certain issues have persisted such as sexual harassment, ghosting, and other common societal issues. I can understand that these issues are more complex than meets the eye, due to connections with underlying struggles as human beings (i.e. the desire to feel connected, and to find companionship). While I understand the moderation and STOP team is hard at work to tackle these issues, more can be done to protect the community and overall experience. The most important issue is that listeners are not moderated properly. The lack of quality of chats puts member safety at high risk. This is very concerning.
It is important to note though, that these instances happen less when conversing with a verified listener. Clear instructions to seeking a verified and trained listener would help greatly for new members for member safety.
As I believe in change through trial and error to reach improvement regarding listening skills, the inconsistency of the quality of listeners is an expected drawback of the system currently implemented. Learning through mistakes is essential to reaching the growth zone; the trial by fire defines what it means to be human. Perhaps, greater promotion for learning how to learn listening skills through trained mentors would be a great benefit for those aspiring to become better listeners.
The treasure trove of resources they offer is nothing to scoff at. The training they provide for free is something everyone should take for granted. Particularly during this mental-health era, these resources will prove to become basic invaluable skills to be transferred into quotidian/daily interactions with others.
As for now, my experience in the leadership roles and teenage section is limited and outdated. Perhaps in the future, I will be able to provide a better understanding and review regarding the other sections :) I look forward to working with the various teams in the future!
I'd like to also add in how many inactive chats I have been coming across. As a listener who volunteers my time to listen, I expect people to similarly respect the time I put into volunteering to listen and empathise with them.
Unfortunately, I have been getting too many people requesting for chats, and people not replying. As I only take on 1 on 1 chats as much as possible with a 15 minute afk tolerance, this is quite unacceptable.
Furthermore, I have much concern with the rating system. As feedback from members is not provided to the listener themselves directly, this is quite a cause for concern in terms of quality control. Information regarding skills and member feedback should be transparent to the listener immediately. In professional settings, there is line management and clinical supervision, and the feedback avenues are much more transparent and fluid. Not only so, the one-dimensional 1 to 5-stars rating for each listener is not helpful. Different listeners may have different therapeutic styles and approaches to conversation. It is the nature of social-related interactions fundamentally also. I do not believe the ratings are moderated that well currently. I have much concern for people with a low rating, as this could also affect their self-esteem in the long-run, making them more vulnerable to guilt-tripping tactics from personal-development courses on listening on 7cups.
In the past when I was a verified listener marker, there were quite rigid guidelines and fundamentals to pass someone. Although I agree with a few of the statements and key points on the marking key, I no longer agree to a lot of the criteria, and most of all, the rigidity of what is to be expected after personal experience in professional clinical practice. Conversations and conversational skills appear in a dynamic way. The same goes with active listening skills.
---
All-in-all, i do not recommend 7cups, despite it being a possible option to learn active listening skills. Although you may benefit in the short-term, as a member or listener, it is not a sustainable or effective website.

Horrible for mental health
Discriminatory, horrible for mental health.
Deactivated my account for implication of sexual talk without any proof. I do not know which moderator that banned me and I dont even know what sexual talk they are referring to when I cant even see the proof of such. I have seen other long term members have sexual talk all the time without getting even a warning, with even some moderators joining in. What kind of a support website does such a thing ?

Harmful greedy exploiters!
It is a for profit system that relies on a supply of troubled individuals. This system exploits not only the members, it also exploits the free pool of listeners, which is the main selling point for the site that one has someone to talk to.
I) Member exploitation: They interact with group chats and listeners. Group chats are supposed to be moderated, they are but the moderators do nothing but to discourage religion talk or political talks, but anything else, however harmful that can go on, will go on. And they have a barrage of spammers, trollers which the site has not been able to address. In essence, the group chats are breeding ground for more emotional turbulence. However, at the start it might seem normal, but only with time the problems become very apparent and you can not unsee.
The listeners that the members are exposed to, most of them are untrained to deal with the emotional issues they are exposed to, they can not provide the help one needs. In many occasions, the listeners behave inappropriately causing the members more distress.
These factors do not hold back 7cups or upset them, as it goes to benefit their bottom line, which is pushing paid features to these troubled members; many of these troubles may sneakily get into people's lives right from the site! So, hey, an extra supply!
Ii) Listener exploitation: They are not provided with enough training, assistance and it is no wonder why most of them are not good at their assumed roles. And, 7cups is fully aware of this, which is why they are treated as second class helper, they here to provide a juxtaposition between paid listeners vs unpaid ones. If they wished for their listeners to provide better quality effort, it could not be a volunteer service. For a volunteer service, they ask too, too much from their listeners while giving too, too little back in return. And, many of these listeners are harmed in a very real sense, as these inexperienced listeners go on to deal with and exposed to troubling mental health problems, they may run into many emotional issues themselves, which is corroborated further by often encouraging listeners to get a member account!
7cups of tea is made from a place of greed, and with a front of wishing to be a place of harmony and help. But if you critically look at their operation, it is more than clear that they are not here to help, there are here to profit on your problems!

Prepare to get banned
Prepare to get banned
You will get randomly banned if a mod just doesnt like you. Tough luck, your account is now deactivated, you dont get to know why, so you cant really fight it.
Youre just gonna have to deal with it.
Apart from that, the Listener training is laughable, you might do better just talking to a random person on the street. In fact the minimal training they get, is actually teaching them to just repeat what the person theyre talking to, has just told them. If you want to hear what you just said but slightly different, youll feel right at home.
But they dont want you to actually use listeners anyway, they want you to pay for their therapists

There are some terrible "listeners" on…
There are some terrible "listeners" on this site.
Do not touch it if you're feeling down, irritated or struggling with your emotional welfare, most of the "listeners" are terrible people.
I've had ones which have:
- only been there to troll other people
- only listen until you give them a good rating
- tried to have text sex
- completely ignore you or don't respond at all
- been really rude or ignorant to a situation
- been completely judgemental
- not been able to speak your language
- only made a situation feel worse or feel worse about yourself
